The Living Room

As we pondered our preparedness for disastrous, out of the ordinary or just plain inconvenient situations we started thinking that there is more to being prepared than what items you have stocked up.  What you know can make the difference between life and death.

If you need to know what to do and how to do it in a an emergency situation, here are some life-saving sources:

Source #2:  Make it a priority on your list to go to Ready.gov.  The "Ready America" link has everything a family needs to know to "Get a Kit, Make a Plan and Be Informed" for any type of emergency situation.  For the junior family members the "Ready Kids" link is a flash animated, game loaded way for kids to learn how to be prepared.
Source #3:  The American Red Cross site is a real first-aid kit for emergency planning.  Click on the "Preparedness" link for a wealth of information for home, school, work, community and for all disaster types.

Source #4:  We forecast a high amount of knowledge being downloaded at NOAA's National Weather Service site Weather.gov.  Following the "Weather Safety" link will connect you to information and preparedness plans for any type of weather conditions.  The Education/Outreach link will open up many choices for better understanding through videos, kid's activities and even an on-line weather school entitled "Jetstream" for all of the meteorologist wanna-be Weather Channel junkies!

Source #5:  What if an emergency situation left you in a wilderness survival situation?  In our land of luxuries we're not all prepared to really "rough it".  A great resource for knowledge hunting in this area is a Boy Scout Handbook.   Another tool for living on the wild side is the Wilderness Survival site.  The contents of which are taken from the actual US Army training manuals.  If your only survival training has been vicariously through the TV show "Survivor" you may want to take their "Survival Quiz" to see how ready you are!

Source #6:  One more survival source is from the Knowledge Hound site's Disaster Preparedness page called Readiness, Response, Survival, Recovery.  It's an index of Internet information.

The best plan we know of for being prepared for times of trouble is to have the Wisdom of the Word, Source #1, the Creator and Sustainer of Life.  King David of the nation of Israel (and the father of King Solomon, known as the wisest man in history) was well acquainted with the storms of life.  God inspired him to record these Words of Wisdom for us:

Psalm 91 Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God
1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust."
3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.
4 He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge;  His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it shall not come near you.
8 Only with your eyes shall you look, and see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14 "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation."

Our best plan for any emergency is to know this information by heart.
